What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) uses cognitive behavioral therapies with the incorporation of mindfulness, the idea of radical acceptance, and behavioral approaches to treatment. DBT aims to treat therapy-resistant emotional and behavioral dysregulation problems. The core component to this therapy is DBT skills training groups, which address:

  • Mindfulness
  • Distress Tolerance
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness
  • Emotion Regulation

PDG’s DBT-informed program includes every skills training group and provides all-around support, based on the revolutionary DBT work of Professor Marsha Linehan at the University of Washington.

What is Radically Open DBT?

Similar to traditional DBT, Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that combines elements of cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness, with an emphasis on skill development. However, RO-DBT specifically aims to help individuals who struggle with emotional and behavioral overcontrol and rigid patterns of thinking and behaving. To achieve this, RO-DBT incorporates the latest research from social signaling theory into skills training, to cultivate openness, flexibility, and social connectedness. The core skills taught in RO-DBT include:

  • Openness
  • Flexible Responding
  • Social Signaling
  • Self-Enquiry & Self-Validation
  • Relationship Effectiveness

PDG’s RO-DBT program provides comprehensive therapeutic support to individuals, as well as weekly core skills training groups, modeled after the work of Dr. Thomas Lynch.

Which option is right for you?

Put broadly, traditional DBT addresses issues related to under-regulation of emotions, whereas RO-DBT addresses issues related to the over-regulation of emotions. Both PDG programs provide a range of therapeutic support, including individual therapy, family therapy, phone coaching, and skills group trainings.

Both traditional DBT and RO-DBT also use similar therapeutic approaches, combining elements of cognitive and behavioral techniques with mindfulness training and finding a balance between acceptance and change. Both programs broadly address emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal concerns.

Traditional DBT

Traditional DBT addresses issues and behaviors related to under-regulation of emotions. This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Truancy
  • Behavioral Concerns
  • Relationship Concerns
  • Impulsivity
  • Self-harming Behaviors
  • Suicidal Ideation
  • Difficult-to-treat Anxiety and Depression

What can I expect from PDG’s traditional DBT program?

PDG currently offers separate adolescent (13-18) and adult (18+) DBT skills training groups, held once a week for the duration of the 5-module program.

Skills training groups will provide you with practical tools and techniques derived from DBT’s four core modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These group sessions foster a sense of community as you learn and practice these skills alongside others who share similar struggles. Additionally, individuals enrolled in the skills groups will gain access to phone coaching, empowering you to apply DBT skills in real-time situations.

You will also have the option to work closely with a therapist who specializes in DBT, although this is not a requirement. Through individual therapy, you will receive personalized guidance and support to explore and address the root causes of your emotional challenges. Our therapists will help you develop effective coping strategies, improve distress tolerance, regulate your emotions, and enhance your interpersonal skills. Adolescent participants are also provided the opportunity to engage with family members in a supportive environment during biweekly family therapy sessions.
