Suicide Lifeline 988

Suicide Lifeline 988 Has Launched!

Starting this month, those dealing with suicidal ideation or other mental health crisis all across the United States can call 988 to get immediate help from licensed counselors. The new number offers a more accessible way for those in need to get help ASAP and the the original, 11-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) will also continue to function. In Maryland, the 211 number will also continue to be available. If callers indicate the need for crisis support, they’ll be routed to the new 988 number.

Proven Effective

Launched in 2005, the Suicide Lifeline has grown to over 200 crisis centers and a total of over 20 million calls. Explore the impact the Lifeline has had on Maryland here. The national hotline is proven effective at reducing suicide attempts and ideation, evidenced in studies done by Dr. Madelyn Gould of Columbia University:

  • 8% of callers are in the midst of a suicide attempt
  • 58% of callers had a prior suicide attempt
  • 60% of the callers at imminent risk when the call begins don’t need emergency services after they’ve talked to a Lifeline counselor
  • 80% of callers said that Lifeline follow-up calls prevented their suicide attempt

Additional Services

Another exciting feature of this new 988 number is the ability to text and chat. When an individual sends a text, they’ll be connected with trained counselors who are part of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. All counselors – whether contacted by call or text – are adept at listening to, understanding, supporting, and connecting individuals with resources.

In addition, the Veteran Crisis Line is also now available via the new number by calling 988, then pressing 1. To explore FAQs about veteran support, click here. To find Maryland crisis centers and support their efforts, click here
